Anyone who knows me knows I regularly go to the animal shelter I used to work at. Its a tough place to work at for a lot of people. Usually they either end up leaving because of the difficult things they see on a daily basis or they have to harden their hearts. Occasionally there are people who remain intact but its never for long. Euthanasia is something that people scoff at and it really is overused. But people need to remember that nobody wants to euthanize innocent animals. People are to blame. For their neglect and ignorance.
Today I came across a litter of 3 kittens that were in bad shape at the shelter. Somehow people forgot about them because there are just too many animals and not enough people. The one kitten was in such bad shape I picked her up and she weakly cried, laying limp in my hand. Babies are hard to care for and sometimes they just crash. She was clearly the runt and wasnt eating from the bottle. Unfortunately no one alerted medical staff of this yesterday otherwise maybe we could have helped her. I still tried. I force fed her nutrical and milk, tried to warm her up, and was ready to give her fluids. But as I was holding her in the palm of my hand (that she spanned), I know it was too late. So I took her to be euthanized. And I held her tint body all wrapped up and I pet her and I kept her warm as she drifted off to sleep. And after she was clearly not conscious I had to get out of there. I dont get emotional that often over euthanasia but it breaks my heart to know she suffered because of the lack of human attention.
I cleaned up her siblings and they were much more active than her, though still dehydrated. Who knows if they will live. But I tell myself I tried. I advocate and I push people there to take more time and attention. No one that works there wants to see any animal suffer. Its just a byproduct of idiocy.
So next time you let your cat have kittens, or fail to give your dog shots, or ignore animal cruelty, remember that it all leads to innocent souls suffering. Just remember.
